Windows 10 - Should You Upgrade?

By now most of you using Windows 7 or 8 will have noticed a Windows icon in your system tray (bottom right of your screen) telling you ‘How to get Windows 10 for free!'

How did it get there? It arrived at your desktop via windows update, and what its offering isn't all that bad. After all- when was the last time Microsoft gave you anything?!? Every time a new version of windows has arrived Microsoft has made us pay if we wanted it.

So why would Microsoft just give you this new version of Windows on July 29th, the date set for the market release of Windows 10? Put simply, they figure the best way to keep you as a paying customer is to have you in their environment, using their platform.

So should you take their offer? The fine print indicates this free upgrade won't be available for long. Whether or not that is actually the case, Windows 10 looks and feels good.

Notably, the Windows 10 start button now has the design elements of Windows 8's full screen menu, but is actually similar in size and function to the traditional Windows 7 (and XP) Start menu. I think this is going to make a lot of people happy!

Is upgrading going to be easy? Yes. Reserve your free upgrade with your email address. The upgrade will be managed through Windows update.

Reasons why you shouldn't update:

  • You like your computer just the way it is and you not interested in getting something new. Good on you! The world needs more people who want less!
  • You have specialized third party software, or unique devices that you use to run a business. While these might work seamlessly with Windows 10, they might not. It would be wise to seek advice from the manufacturer or supplier before agreeing to the upgrade.

Of course if you have any other questions or would some help with anything to do with your computer systems, I'm always very happy to hear from you!
